Picture this: You're paddling out into the lineup, the water is crystal clear and ice-cold. Snow-capped mountains tower into the sky on your left and right. And then – the Northern Lights. Green and purple, they dance above you as you wait for the next wave. Sounds like a dream? Welcome to Unstad in Lofoten 🌊✨
I'm Dominik, founder of Oceanmata, and I love discovering places where the power of the ocean is palpable. Unstad is exactly such a place – rugged, wild, and absolutely magical. In this article, I'll take you to the northernmost surf spot in the world.

Unstad: The northernmost surf spot in the world 🌍
Unstad is located at 68° North – far above the Arctic Circle in Lofoten, Norway. This small fishing village with barely 30 inhabitants is surrounded by dramatic granite mountains that plunge directly into the Norwegian Sea. There are no promenades, no surf shops on every corner, no crowds. Just you, the sea, and a landscape that leaves you speechless.
Surfing in Unstad is pure adventure. The waves come directly from the North Atlantic, driven by storms over Greenland and Iceland. This means powerful, consistent swells that meet a perfect bay.
The Wave: A First-Class Left-Hand Break
The main wave in Unstad is a left-hand point break that offers wonderfully long rides under the right conditions. The wave breaks over rock and sand, which gives it a unique dynamic. Advanced surfers can find waves of 2 to 4 meters here, sometimes even more.
What makes Unstad special: The waves are incredibly consistent. While many surf spots around the world only work seasonally, the North Atlantic delivers surfable conditions here almost all year round. The best swells come between September and March – exactly when the Northern Lights are dancing.

What you need: Gear for Arctic Surfing 🧊
Let me be honest: surfing in Unstad is not for the faint of heart. The water temperatures in winter are 4-6°C, in summer a maximum of 12-14°C. Here's your checklist:
- Wetsuit: At least 6/5mm, preferably with integrated hood
- Neoprene gloves: 5mm – your fingers will thank you
- Booties: 7mm for winter, 5mm for summer
- Neoprene hood: If not integrated into the suit – essential
- Board: A slightly thicker board with more volume helps, as the thick neoprene restricts movement
Sounds like a lot? It is. But as soon as you're in the wave and the snow-covered mountains glide past you, you forget every bit of cold. I promise.
Unstad Arctic Surf: Your Basecamp at the End of the World
The Unstad Arctic Surf Camp is the go-to spot for surfers from all over the world. Run by the local family who have lived here for generations, you'll find everything you need: cozy cabins, surfboard rental, lessons for beginners – and a sauna right on the beach where you can warm up after your session.
And then there are the cinnamon buns. Freshly baked, warm, with just the right amount of sugar. Many surfers say they are the best in the world – and after a session in 5°C cold water, they really do taste heavenly 😋

Best travel time: When to visit Unstad?
September to March is prime time. The swells are strongest, the nights long enough for Northern Lights, and the landscape transforms into a winter wonderland. However, you need experience – the waves can get heavy.
June to August is perfect for beginners. The waves are smaller and gentler, the days are endlessly long (midnight sun!), and the water temperatures are a bit more tolerable. While there are no Northern Lights then, you'll be surfing in the light of the midnight sun – also an unforgettable experience.
Why surfers should protect the ocean 🐋
Places like Unstad remind us how breathtaking our planet is. But even here, far from big cities, you'll find plastic on the beach – washed ashore from the North Atlantic, from ships, from cities thousands of kilometers away.
That's exactly why we founded Oceanmata. Our goal: to see plastic not as waste, but as a valuable resource. For every product you buy from us, 1 kg of plastic is collected from the ocean. We have already collected over 300,000 kg with our community of more than 165,000 ocean heroes.
Those who love the ocean – whether freediving, surfing, or simply at the beach – bear responsibility. And it can be a lot of fun.
Protect what you love 💙
You surf, you dive, you love the sea?
Then make the ocean your mission. With every Oceanmata product, you retrieve 1 kg of plastic from the sea.
