Earth Day 2026 – and what does it have to do with you?

Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day is celebrated worldwide. Since 1970, it has reminded us that our Earth is not an endless self-service store – but an ecosystem that depends on us. Sounds big? It is. But here's the good news: you can start making a difference today. Not tomorrow. Not with a master plan. But with very small, concrete decisions.
When Dominik Karl first arrived in Medewi, Bali, in 2020, that's exactly what he experienced. He had traveled to Asia to learn to surf – and found beaches full of plastic waste. There he met a local who collected plastic from the beach alone every day. No big program, no NGO behind him – just a person who no longer wanted to stand by and watch. This encounter changed everything. Dominik quit his secure job as an engineer at Airbus and founded Oceanmata.
1. Understand why the ocean needs you
The ocean produces over 50% of our oxygen and regulates our climate. Nevertheless, millions of tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year. The problem doesn't start at the beach – it starts in our daily lives. Every plastic bottle, every package, every disposable bag can find its way into the sea. Especially in regions like Southeast Asia, where waste infrastructure is lacking, this becomes a disaster.
That's exactly why our 11-person team in Medewi, Bali works every day to collect plastic – on beaches, in coastal communities, and with river barriers that intercept plastic before it even reaches the sea. Because cleaning up alone is not enough – we have to tackle the problem at its source.
2. Make your everyday life more plastic-free – step by step
Living plastic-free sounds like sacrifice? It doesn't have to. It's about conscious alternatives:
- Stainless steel drinking bottle instead of PET bottle – saves over 150 disposable bottles a year
- Cloth bag always with you – instead of new plastic bags with every purchase
- Solid shampoo and soap – less packaging, just as good
- Beeswax wraps instead of cling film – reusable and beautiful
- Sustainable phone cases – your daily companion can be part of the solution
The trick: Don't change everything at once, but change one habit every month. Small steps, big impact.
3. Support projects that really make a difference
There are many organizations fighting plastic pollution. But how do you know which ones are truly effective? Look for transparency: Where exactly is plastic collected? What happens to the plastic? Who works on site?
At Oceanmata, you can trace exactly that: Our team collects in Medewi, Bali. The plastic is sorted on site, shredded, and recycled with Precious Plastic machines. New products are created from the recycled material – like our bestsellers. Plastic types that cannot be recycled are disposed of in an environmentally friendly way at the Klungkung facility. And 5% of our revenue goes directly back into cleanup efforts – entirely without investors, all built from scratch.
“I can't deal with so many things that need my help. When you buy something from you, it's so easy. It costs a bit more, but I have a completely different feeling when it arrives." – Oceanmata customer
4. Give the gift of awareness – not just things
Earth Day is also a perfect occasion to inspire people around you about the issue. And not with a wagging finger, but with gifts that tell a story.
Our marine animal sponsorships are a good example: a symbolic sponsorship for a turtle, whale, or shark – with a certificate and regular updates. A gift that shows: I care about the ocean. And hopefully, you do too.
5. Think differently about plastic
Here's perhaps the most important point: Plastic isn't just trash. Plastic is a valuable raw material – if we treat it correctly. The problem isn't the material itself, but how we handle it.
At Oceanmata, we develop innovative recycling solutions to turn waste into new products. The plastic our team collects in Medewi deserves a second life – as a bracelet, as a sheet, as part of something new. This shift in perspective is crucial: We must stop seeing plastic as worthless.
6. Become part of a community that acts
You are not alone. Over 165,000 ocean heroes are already part of the Oceanmata community. People who have understood: A phone case alone won't save the world. But thousands of people taking small steps together can.
And that's exactly the Oceanmata philosophy. We don't just talk – we act. Every day. With daily beach clean-ups, river barriers, educational lessons in local schools, and free trash cans for locals in Medewi.
Earth Day is every day
April 22nd reminds us once a year that our Earth needs protection. But ocean protection is not a one-time event. It's an attitude. Every conscious decision counts – whether you choose a sustainable phone case today, bring your water bottle, or tell someone about Oceanmata.
As the UNEP emphasizes: Each of us has the power to break the cycle of plastic pollution. Start today.
